Two jobs, three candidates and a boxing ring – office politics is front and centre as Mike Bartlett’s Bull returns to the Young Vic after sellout success earlier in 2015.
The show has already enjoyed a hugely successful run at the Sheffield Crucible, a stint on the New York stage as part of the ‘Brits off Broadway festival ’, a National Theatre Award for Best New Play and the 2015 Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Affiliate Theatre. And, with another Mike Bartlett premiere impressing at the Almeida, plus the sustained success of Charles III , Bull  reinforces the starry credentials of its playwright.
Whilst the plot holds few surprises (we defy anyone not to know who is about to be handed their P45 within the opening ten minutes), it is this inevitability that proves the play’s most brilliant and disturbing feature.
At just 55 minutes, there is little breathing room in this darkly crafted production, and by setting a battle of corporate wits in the most brutal of sporting arenas, director Clare Lizzimore forces the audience to question their own loyalties, daring them to side with the victors in whose realm the action takes place.

Public booking opens at 10am on Wednesday 5 August

    What the critics say

    THE TELEGRAPH

"In this tense, muscular little play – just 55 minutes long – writer Mike Bartlett plots that destruction with the studied, elegant technique of a matador haunting a bull."

    Laura Barnett

    THE NEW YORK TIMES

"it is queasily entertaining, with a well-drilled cast that keeps its adrenaline level high and, at the very end, raises it off the charts.  The image of Mr. Troughton’s face at certain moments, that of a bullfrog paralyzed by a glimpse of a bird of prey about to swoop down upon it, is likely to stay with you. It is also likely to make watching “The Apprentice” at least a little less pleasurable."

    Ben Brantley

    THE GUARDIAN

"the office becomes a corporate wrestling ring, complete with water cooler, with the audience sitting or standing around the four sides. You cannot avoid being drawn into the contest and becoming complicit – even guiltily enjoying the spectacle of the kill."

    Lyn Gardner

    About the playwright

Mike Bartlett's star is certainly rising. His satire on royal life King Charles III was an enormous success at the Almeida before gaining a West End transfer and making him one of the most talked about writers in London theatre. With credits such as Earthquakes in London at The National, Chariots of Fire for the Hampstead (another West End transfer) and the Olivier award-winning Cock (the original run of which starred Ben Wishaw), plus the hotly anticipated Game forming the jewel in the Almeida's new season, this is a playwright who is well on the way to earning a place as a household name.

This British gastropub venue boasts cosy comforts, a wood-panelled dining and original artwork that is available to buy. The reliable and thoughtful seasonal menu may feature rabbit with mustard sauce and excellent chips, or steamed Scottish cod fillet and spinach. Tables can only be booked in advance in person at the bar, so it is worth arriving early to snare a reservation.
