Jam-packed with glorious arias, duets and orchestral set pieces, Puccini’s opera La Bohème, is amongst the most popular ever written. First performed in 1896, Puccini’s story takes place in 1840s Paris – the height of La Vie Bohème. The tale begins in a garret, with a poet (Rodolfo) and his friends grumbling about their humble circumstances. Soon the seamstress (Mimi) from next door arrives to borrow matches, and a heart-breaking love story develops.

Like all Puccini, there’s a magic about the work which can be experienced only in situ; words can never convey the emotional impact of his luscious orchestrations and melodies combined with his unique gift for telling a story through music. Puccini at its best can be stunning. Few do it better.
ENO are sure to offer a stimulating production. They’ve enlisted the hot-shot Austrailian director Benedict Andrews, who recently set the theatre world alight with The Young Vic’s Streetcar Named Desire, and at the helm of the orchestra is Xian Zhang, who knows this Italian repertoire as well as anyone. The ENO has promised a contemporary, visually stunning production, and we’d be foolish to miss it.

    ENO 2015/16 BOOKING

The English National Opera have launched their line up for much of next season, and it's an exciting one: five new productions and three esteemed revivals, with bel canto classics alongside works from Mozart, Verdi, Gilbert & Sullivan and Philip Glass. General booking opens on 27 May, but if you are a friend of the company you can choose the prime seats from 6 May. A week before the public release, on 20 May, half-price disability tickets will be available, as will the seasonal subscription offer, which gives you a discount on your overall order when you buy for three or more productions at once.
