However, every cloud has a silver lining, as they say, and so it is that the Covid-19 lockdown has prompted the organisers, Serendipity, to produce Alternative LDIF 20, a digital festival of dance. That means it’ll be accessible everywhere, including your own home.
Starting on 29 April, which is International Dance Day, Alternative LDIF 20 continues for two weeks and includes a veritable cornucopia of dance performances, film screenings, lectures, an online exhibition, a behind-the-scenes look at the artists at work, and the launch of the Serendipity podcast.
As 2020 marks LDIF’s tenth anniversary, the festival will also see the publication of a new book, LDIF: 10 Years in the Making, written by Pawlet Brookes, artistic director and CEO of Serendipity.
The programme is so abundant, it would be impossible to list it in full, but here are some of the highlights:
Wednesday 29 April at 7pm: the festival launches with a brief look at its evolution and growth over the past 10 years.
The online exhibition, Black Men in Dance: Masculinity in Motion opens. Through stills, interviews and videos, black men in dance talk about how masculinity is portrayed and perceived in various genres of dance.
Thursday 7 May at 4pm: Short Films Screening: a diverse programme of films exploring dance, storytelling, identity and expression. Among the genres covered are flamenco, street and contemporary dance.
Friday 8 May at 7pm: Tabanka Dance Ensemble – the company presents a new work (here streamed online for the first time), blending ancestral movements and African influences.
Tuesday 12-Friday 15 May at 7pm: Yinka Esi Graves: The Disappearing Act (Work in Progress) In a series of short films to be streamed on successive evenings, flamenco dancer Yinka Esi Graves (pictured top) explores the constant interplay between being seen and invisibility.
Saturday 16 May at 7pm: Alternative LDIF 20 closes with 30 Seconds of Freedom, a collective work bringing together dancers from around the world.
