How to get the perfect Christmas party make-up

By Eleonore Dresch on 7/12/2022

From the glittery nights of London sub-culture in the 80s, magazine covers and iconic fashion campaigns to the Hollywood red carpet, star make-up artist Kay Montano has done every party look one can possibly imagine.

Her clientele includes Hollywood stars such as Jennifer Connelly, Julianne Moore, Zoe Kravitz and Anne Hathaway (to name a few) and she is also a Chanel beauty ambassador.

I meet up with her on a Friday afternoon, a couple of hours before I need to get ready for a Christmas party. I have a cold and look slightly (okay, very) drained and I wonder how I am going to pull off a decent party make-up look for the evening. So I ask her for advice.

'Party make-up can be like an accessory, it’s like a clutch' Montano tells me.

‘When you do party make-up, you’re creating. You want to look special. You want to be the occasion, you want to feel different from what you usually do. That’s what's terrific about make-up, you can transform yourself in such a fast way. So for instance, if you're wearing a black dress, you can turn it into something special by wearing gorgeous red lipstick. It will help pull the whole look together.'

Ahead of my party to come, Montano lays down some incredibly useful* and inspiring party make-up tips.

( *Tried and tested by me ahead of the aforementioned party)

1/ Don’t worry too much about trends and trust what works for you

'By the age 35 to 40, most women know what suits them and have perhaps established a way of wearing their eye make-up already. I’d suggest working with your existing style and using a shimmering eye shadow to create more drama'.

2/ Put the emphasis either on your eyes or lips

2/ Choose whether to focus on your eyes or lips

'Very few models can take a really strong eye and a really strong mouth. And I think in real life that's even harder because you haven't got the right light necessary or a great photographer.'

So either focus on your eyes or your lips.

Kay's tips: Gold eyelids are very in at the moment. A little pop of gold just above the iris will look good with darker lips.

3/ Skin prep: always make sure that you have a good base

'It is very important to illuminate your skin before putting some make-up on.'

Kay recommends:

4/ Go matt finish on your T-zone and shiny on your cheeks

4/ Go matt finish on your T-zone and shiny on your cheeks

‘I don't like shiny nostrils. I don't like shiny chins, but I love shiny eyes and shiny cheekbones. Makeup is an optical illusion, so anything which is dark and matt goes in and anything which is shiny and light pops out. Makeup should bring attention to your eyes and your mouth. The T-zone of your face (nose, cheek and forehead) should be matt while your eyes and cheekbones should shine’

Kay's tips: Use loose powder on your T-zone and make your cheekbones glow with blushers. Never put powder on your cheekbones. They need to be glowy but don’t go overboard with the glow.

5/ If you have perfect skin, leave it alone

'Unless you want to tint your skin, then I would use Bronze Universal.'

6/ Concealer should always be worn when you put some mascara on

6/ Wearing mascara? Wear concealer too

'Makeup amplifies dark circles. So concealer is absolutely essential.'

7/ Never without an eyelashes curler

7/ Never leave without your eyelash curler

'I am obsessed with my eyelash curler. It is the one item I can’t leave without. It really wakes up your eyes. If you wear mascara it makes a huge difference. Subtle, but it has a lot of impact... Eyebrow grooming is also key.'

CHANEL LA PALETTE SOURCILS - SHOP HERE

8/ Mascara — use simple brushes, not big fat brushes

8/ Mascara: use simple, fine brushes

'You won't find many makeup artists who like big fat brushes because, with big fat brushes, you've got no control.'

Kay's favourites:

Rimmel lashes extension is really good and so is the new clickable black mascara noir Allure.

9/ Ultimate tip when using eyeshadow

9/ Using eyeshadow? Apply loose powder first

'If you're using eyeshadow, it's important to put a little bit of loose powder just under your brow. That stops it from going blotchy because the minute there's powder, the product doesn't adhere or stick.'

We love:

KEVYN AUCOIN NEUTRAL LOOSE POWDER - SHOP HERE

LAURA MERCIER TRANSLUCENT LOOSE POWDER - SHOP HERE

10/ Ultimate lip liner tip

10/ Lip liners should match your natural lip colour

'A good lip liner should have the same colour as your lips. Apply a little bit of it (about a millimetre over the lips, at the top especially), and then apply any coloured lipstick on top of the lips and the line above the lips.'

Kay's favourite:

11/ Get a good light when putting some makeup on

11/ Don't underestimate the power of a good light

'A mirror with lights on it is ideal. You can get a good lighting system now within a small budget, thanks to the whole selfie trend.'

HOLLYWOOD TRIFOLD MIRROR - SHOP HERE

12/ Brushes are very important

12/ Brushes are very important

‘A brush is really important for blending and making application much easier. It might sound boring, but these are the things that make really good make-up possible.'

And when the party is over...

And when the party is over...

'I use Chanel eye make-up remover (truly the best, but don't rub it in) and a foaming cleanser in the evening. Then I simply rinse my face in the morning with a cloth.'
