The famous Kunstakademie Düsseldorf was the starting place for many superstar photographers in the 1970s. Ben Brown Fine Arts celebrates these illustrious figures alongside some striking works by their professor Bernd Becher and his wife Hilla Becher in a fantastic new photography exhibition.
Who were the Bechers?
Bernd and Hilla Becher spread the word about the ‘New Objectivity’ style in German photography through experimental images of industrial structures in the late 1950s. This developed into a new pictorial language that influenced their students, including Candida Höfer, Andreas Gursky, Axel Hütte, Thomas Ruff, Elger Esser and Thomas Strüth - otherwise known as the Düsseldorf School.
Highlights
The Ben Brown show presents examples of this documentary style together with works by Thomas Demand, a former sculpture student at the Kunstakademie who is known for making life-size models of rooms and buildings as identical mirrors of their original.
The influence of the Düsseldorf School extends to contemporary photographic practice, and this show offers a rare chance to see the highest-calibre works by the group’s members side by side.
