Lee Miller: A Woman’s War, IWM London

Pioneering female war photographer Lee Miller gets her very own major show at IWM London (Imperial War Museum) featuring 150 historical images, many of which have never been seen in public before. The six long years of conflict between 1939 and 1945 irreversibly transformed the lives and experiences of European women. One of only four female photojournalists to be accredited as official US war correspondents, Lee Miller spent most of the Second World War recording the experiences of women in Britain and Europe for Vogue Magazine: from the liberation of Paris to the London Blitz. Her work offers a fascinating and thought-provoking insight into their world. We also love Miller for her unique talent to combine art, fashion and photojournalism in a single image.

There are four distinct sections of this exhibition which explore the lives of women before, during and after the war. The journey begins with Miller’s early photography in the years leading up to the Second World War. Visitors will love this captivating insight into Miller's early memories, photographic influences, and private life.
You'll then be able to get to grips with Miller’s coverage as a war correspondent for Vogue Magazine and her interest of the impact of war on women. Not only do her images document the hardship and suffering of wartime, they also illustrate the liberating flip-side of the conflict, with women suddenly leaving the home for the workplace. The exhibition contemplates both the emotional and physical toll of war on women, including Miller herself. Finally, the display examines the immediate aftermath of the war, and the process of recovery.
