Who is Rosalind Nashashibi? Biography
It may not be the obvious go-to for trailblazing contemporary art, but the Imperial War Museum’s diverse programme frequently includes the work of some rising stars and their response to the collection. Next up is Rosalind Nashashibi, a Palestinian-Irish artist whose film works have been internationally acclaimed for their honest exposure of modern day urban life.
Rosalind Nashashibi & The State of Things
Perhaps her best known work is The State of Things (2006), a black-and-white film that captures elderly women at a Salvation Army jumble sale, to the soundtrack of a love song by the Egyptian singer Um Kolsoum. The film leaves the exact location and identity of its characters indistinct, inviting us to recognise the hazy line between cultures and nations.
This work made Nashashibi the first woman to win the Beck’s Futures prize – and her response to the IWM collection is highly anticipated.
