The Science Museum's unmissable exhibition of the visionary 19th century photographer Julia Margaret Cameron is high on our list of the best photography exhibitions in town. The show in the Media Space marks the 200th anniversary of one of the pioneers of modern photographic portraiture and features spectacular Julia Margaret Cameron photos and some curious objects relating to her career.
Julia Margaret Cameron portraiture
The striking portraits on display immortalise many of Cameron’s closest friends and family, as well as a number of influential artistic and literary figures from the Victorian era, including Scottish philosopher Thomas Carlyle and Poet Laureate Alfred Lord Tennyson. Cameron’s images are fascinatingly powerful and energetic, made all the more expressive by her trademark lack of sharp focus and inclusion of technical faults like scratches and smudges.
A particular highlight to look out for is the only existing print of Cameron’s iconic Iago portrait. The exhibition also features the original manuscript of Cameron’s autobiography Annals of my Glass House, along with personal letters and notes. The Science Museum have even got their hands on the only piece of Cameron’s photographic equipment known to survive – her camera lens.
Don't miss this particularly special exhibition highlighting the work of one of the finest female photographer.
