The South London Gallery plays host to the radical Swiss artist Thomas Hirschhorn and his latest immersive world of tyranny, critical theory and twisting global politics this summer. Our favourite contemporary small arts venue in London will be exhibiting Hirschhorn's new show, ‘In-Between’.
Who is Thomas Hirschhorn? Biography
Born in Switzerland, Hirschhorn has won some of the art world’s most prestigious prizes and his varied work has ranged from graphic arts to ambitious installations. Parisians may remember the spectacular Flamme Éternelle Thomas Hirschhorn show at the Palais Tokyo in 2014 when the enormous contemporary space transformed into a wasteland of disused tyres and abandoned furniture which visitors could add to or destroy. Recently he finished the project Gramsci Monument in the U.S., to commemorate his favourite philosopher Antonio Gramsci and part of a set of four monuments to the giants of European philosophy, the others being to Spinoza, Deleuze and Bataille.

For ‘In-Between’ Hirschhorn returns to the image of the ruin to consider this quotation by Gramsci: ‘Destruction is difficult. It is as difficult as creation'. Expect to see the destructive forces of war, nature, accident, corruption and death at play, harnessed by Hirschhorn into a new kind of experience, which he describes as 'a range of successes, failures and in-betweens.’
