Roni Horn: Butterfly Doubt, Hauser & Wirth

Powerful contemporary tastemaker Hauser & Wirth has devoted both its Savile Row galleries to the chameleon artist Roni Horn in a new exhibition of the New Yorker's photography, drawing, writing and sculpture.

Horn is greatly influenced by the volatile and changing landscape of Iceland, and has returned to the isolated wilderness throughout her career. One of her best-known pieces, You Are the Weather consists of 100 photographs of the same woman, showing only her face with her body submerged in the hot Icelandic springs. Looking directly at the viewer, the woman's expression changes each time, from anger to candid to confused as the weather dramatically changes around her.

For this exhibition at the Hauser & Wirth London outpost, Roni Horn showcases three series of intricate drawings that, like her previous work, examine themes of identity and gender. Each series uses a distinct method of drawing which is as much sculptural as it is sketchy. While some of the drawings on display are closer to monoprints, some are paintings of words and phrases with no apparent meaning. Take a closer look at the third set of drawings and you'll find a curious appropriation of the influential American art collector Gertrude Stein’s poetry. However, all the works reflect Horn's concern with difference and sameness. And if this sounds a bit abstract, we can think of the Hauser & Wirth show as a glimpse into the artist's innermost thoughts.
