Idris Khan returns to Victoria Miro in Mayfair in a blaze of smudgy new oil stick works, which continue to push the boundaries between painting and photography.
Idris Khan photography and style
Khan is one of the most popular artists on Victoria Miro's books, and it's easy to understand why when you take in the explosive painterly quality to his multilayered photographs which twist and turn through text, philosophy and metaphysical themes. Khan's style is rooted in large-scale photographs that look like they could be charcoal as they are created, erased, added and destroyed. Hugely varied in his influences, Khan manages to maintain the essence of a single moment in all his work.

Take a trip to Victoria Miro's stronghold in Mayfair and you'll come face to face with Khan's new series of oil stick paintings, which layer blurred and confused lines of writing that comment on the bombardment of conflict images in the media. Don't miss the series of 12 x 16 inch platinum prints where negatives have been blown up, painted with platinum and iron salts, and exposed to daylight, to wondrously rich results. The final photographs on display are equally dizzying as they attempt to capture every stage of a painting.
Khan talks about being influenced by the complex theorist Roland Barthes and his notion of 'punctum', but all you really need to know is that the texture and effect of Khan's work is fascinating.
