Hauser & Wirth gears up for the Diana Thater LACMA retrospective with a sneak preview of immersive new video installations by one of the most striking new media artists working today.
Diana Thater art
Artist Diana Thater has been a pioneer of experimental video and installation art in California since the early 1990s. She is best known for exploring tensions between the natural environment and mediated reality through site-specific installations that transform spaces into an immersive hybrid of architecture, colour and light. Her diverse subjects have enthralled a variety of audiences, with a solo show at the Natural History Museum, London (2009) as well as work in contemporary collections such as the Guggenheim, New York and Tate.
Hauser & Wirth gallery show
At this Hauser & Wirth London exhibition, Thater presents footage from the Galtaji Temple, a Hindu pilgrim site in India. In the first room, projected images of arches, pillars and water pools on the walls and floors of the gallery evoke the tranquil reverence with which pilgrims experience the site. In contrast, the second room contains footage of the temple’s exuberant monkey residents who occupy a space normally unseen by human eyes. By layering these varying and interlocking experiences, Thater invites us to explore “the potentially spiritual relationship between humans and animals”.
