John Stezaker: The Projectionist, The Approach

John Stezaker breaks down photographs from the golden age of Hollywood with a new exhibition at The approach, London

Pair IV, 2007 Collage, 19.5x25.2 cm
British artist John Stezaker is best known for his silkscreen prints from collages of film stills and actors' portraits, transporting us back to the Hollywood glamour of 1940s and 50s cinema. In his new exhibition at The approach gallery, London, Stezaker returns to a familiar theme and picks up where his 1980s silkscreens left off, with an exploration of the transition between light and dark and the British version of film noir. These larger than life silkscreen prints on canvas lure us in with their surreal new lease of life for old images.

Stezaker first got our attention with his uncanny and absurd collages at the 2011 Whitechapel retrospective. Think Sigmar Polke and Gerhard Richter when confronted with his playful overlapping images, which possess a dark streak of wartime Dada artist, Max Ernst. John Stezaker collages are full of intrigue and wit, don't miss them on display in east London this spring.
