Ghosts: Fine Art Society

As Londoner become all red-faced about the destruction of the Paolozzi mosaics at Tottenham Court Road and the closure of Soho's cultural centre, the Fine Art Society considers the dangers of urban regeneration in a new contemporary art exhibition. 
Modernism was about urban renewal after the ruinous effects of the Second World War and and large-scale bombing. And in the ruinous landscape of post-war London, there were endless possibilities for growth and development. In a new exhibition at the Fine Art Society, London six contemporary artists consider the social effects of urban regeneration and the failures of modernism. It's also a provocatively timed show ahead of the General Election to consider the housing crisis in London and the decay of unchecked development. Class boundaries and social consequences of the quick pace of urban development are all explored in this curious new contemporary art exhibition. 
Amongst the artists featured are some exciting names, one of which is Stuart Semple, the creator of that Lady Gaga West East Magazine cover in summer 2010 and the artist that released a hoard of smiley bubbles from the Tate Modern in 2009. For this new show, YBA artist Semple has created a new painting on the failure of social housing projects in South London. Also look out for John Moores Painting Prize winner 2014, Juliette Losq, with a work that first won her the Visitors' Choice award, and Laura Oldfield Ford's discussion of how communities can form amongst the ruins of urban architecture.
