Makiko Kudo, Wilkinson Gallery

Rising star Makiko Kudo blends Japanese anime and French painting in her new whimsical exhibition at Wilkinson Gallery

Makiko Kudo, 27 February - 2 April 2015 Opening: Thursday 26 February, 6 - 8pm
Artist Makiko Kudo is fast becoming known as one of the most sought-after emerging artists in Japan, and her work can already be found in The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. This contemporary art exhibition at Wilkinson Gallery, London gives us a chance to see her work while it’s still a hidden treasure.
Makiko Kudo art
The seemingly straightforward Makiko Kudo paintings cast aside pictorial conventions so delicately that we don’t even realize it at first. Her paintings feature young, female protagonists in cheerfully bright landscapes, which still manage to feel devastatingly lonely. You’ll find that Kudo is less concerned with accurately painting the body, than with the web of psychology behind the scenes. She has a unique ability to blend stylised anime characters with the rich colours of French painting.

In this new exhibition at Wilkinson Gallery, Kudo takes us on a whimsical journey away from the reality of economic depression and unyielding social structures in her native Japan. We find ourselves in a disorientating world of enchanting paintings that are both magical and unnerving.
