Henri Cartier-Bresson photography
Henri Cartier-Bresson is widely celebrated as one of the most important photographers of the twentieth century and the father of photojournalism.
Henri Cartier-Bresson biography
Born in 1908, you might have heard of the Henri Cartier-Bresson “decisive moment” technique, when a photograph captures the essence of a spontaneous event. You’ll love Cartier-Bresson’s candid images for their balance between powerful subject matter and perfectly timed, technical prowess.
Beetles + Huxley London exhibition
This exhibition at one of our favourite photography galleries in London, displays an astonishing collection of privately owned prints. These range from some of Henri Cartier-Bresson’s most famous work – including Behind the Gare Saint-Lazare (1932), and Picnic on the Banks of the Marne, Paris (1938) – to others that have never been exhibited before.
Exhibition highlights
Particularly worth seeing are rare photographs from the 1968 student protests in Paris and early 1970s images in the USSR. Also on display are a number of Cartier-Bresson’s celebrity portraits, including starlets like Coco Chanel and artists Francis Bacon and Pablo Picasso. Philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre and writer of The Stranger, Albert Camus, even make an appearance.
Bresson & Leica
Henri Cartier-Bresson: A Decisive Collection is presented in association with Leica, one of the world’s most famous camera makers. Cartier-Bresson used the lightweight Leica cameras throughout his career, and Leica displays a number of similar vintage cameras in the photography exhibition. Throughout the show, Leica will also present a series of talks and events that celebrate Cartier-Bresson’s famous association with their legendary brand.
If you missed the enormous Cartier-Bresson retrospective at the Pompidou Centre, Paris last year, this is the perfect opportunity to discover the French photographer’s work on London soil. This is one highlight of our photography calendar not to miss!
