You might not have known that Sotheby’s Auction House has a contemporary art gallery known as S|2, close by its London Mayfair address on St George Street. This spring the S2 Sotheby’s gallery hosts an exhibition of works by American artist Ron Gorchov, organised by art dealer and independent curator Vito Schnabel.
Ron Gorchov biography
Born in Chicago in 1930, Gorchov has been working on curved surface paintings and saddle-shaped canvases for most of his career. Situated somewhere between painting and sculpture, Gorchov’s work reacts strongly to the formalism of 1960s minimalism, which was defined by pieces like Carl Andre’s arrangement of bricks in the gallery space. In contrast Gorchov’s distinctive stretchers were an alternative surface, seldom used by other artists.
Ron Gorchov & Vito Schnabel
This is not the first time that Vito Schnabel has curated Gorchov’s work – although it will be the first time his work in shown in the UK. In his early career in 2005, Schnabel curated a retrospective of Gorchov that re-launched his career and landed him a major exhibition at MoMA Ps1.
While Gorchov’s work is complex, this little known London contemporary art gallery in the heart of Mayfair is worth visiting.
