The fifth exhibition of the Christie’s Mayfair gallery focuses on the work of two artists Roman Opałka and Darren Almond, whose practices deal with the progression and flow of time.
Roman Opałka Christie’s art exhibition 2015
Roman Opałka’s exhibition, The End is Definedcoincides with the 50th anniversary of Polish artist Roman Opalka’s birth and the date in 1965 when the painter crafted his first Détail in his 1-inifinity series. Opałka began with painting the number one with white paint at the top left hand corner of a black monochrome, introducing one percent more white pigment into each successive Détail. He eventually reached a completely white canvas when he exceeded the number 5 million. Opałka documented these paintings by simultaneously recording his voice and photographing his self-portrait, finally reaching the Roman Opalka last number, 5,607,249, when he passed away in 2011.
The Roman Opałka 1-infinity series brings into question the idea of death as a finite moment as his work continued to exist after the artist’s death. This is contrasted by Darren Almond’s exploration of the inevitable end of human life in Present Form.
2005 Turner Prize nominee Darren Almond works across a range of media to explore mediations on time and its duration, and themes of personal and historical memory. In this exhibition at Christie’s, London, the idea of time is evoked through the Darren Almond photography.
Commenting on the exhibitions, co-curators Darren Leak and Jacob Uecker said: “this exhibition presents two distinct methods to explore the progression and flow of time. Grasping the relative space and distance of time, the works by Roman Opałka and Darren Almond fade in and out of the perceptible, as the artists embark on an inward journey.”
Try and grasp the fluid nature of time at this new exhibition London which unites 20th century conceptual artist Roman Opałka with British contemporary artist Darren Almond.
