Seamless Transitions is a new commission by London based artist, writer and technologist James Bridle. The New Aesthetic of Bridle’s work explores the effects of technology on culture and political power using a variety of platforms, from photography and social media, to specialist software. The latest manifestation of James Bridle art focuses on immigration and citizenship, exploring and probing the debates surrounding these issues.
Photographers’ Gallery exhibition
This exhibition sheds light on the physical architecture and the legal procedures of immigration and detention facilities in the UK. In collaboration with a leading architectural visualisation company, Bridle has created 3D tours of three key immigration sites: Harmondsworth Immigration Removal Centre, Heathrow; the Social Immigration Appeals Court, London; and the Inflite Jet Centre at Stansted Airport, a private terminal used by the Home Office to deport rejected migrants. The information comes from witness accounts, planning applications and publicly accessible information.
Seamless Transitions raises questions why we don’t know more about these institutions? And how can the experiences of asylum seekers be understood while these sites remain shrouded in secrecy?
Of the photography shows London, Seamless Transitions is original and eye-opening. One not to miss if you’re looking for things to do in Oxford Street London to spark debate this spring.
