The Photographers’ Gallery, London presents two collections of work by Dutch artist Charlotte Dumas this spring: Anima and The Widest Prairies. These captivating images explore the physical and emotional spaces shared by humans and working animals (particularly horses).
Charlotte Dumas: Anima
Dumas’ first video piece focuses on the caisson burial horses of Arlington National Cemetry in the USA, which carry the caskets of soldiers who are to be buried with full honours. The film offers an intimate insight into the lives of these creatures as they drift in and out of sleep.
Charlotte Dumas: The Widest Prairies
The Widest Prairies is a collection of photographs depicting the wild horses of Dayton, Nevada. Once symbolising the freedom and possibilities of going out west to discover gold, these horses are now under great threat from the changing political and economic climate. Dumas exposes their nomadic lives and captures the resilient character of these horses as they visit towns and trailer parks in search of food and water.
Charlotte Dumas’ photography has an extraordinary psychological depth. Evoking the subtle, yet emotive, relationships between the viewer and subject, Dumas is able to highlight the vulnerability in both the human onlookers and the animals.
A thoughtful and provocative photography exhibition in London, this is one catch this spring.
