Virginia Overton, White Cube Mason's Yard

The first White Cube Mason’s Yard exhibition in 2015 sees Virginia Overton’s elemental materials take over the St James’ gallery

Virginia Overton 16 January – 14 March 2015 Mason's Yard
Following an extremely well received solo show at the Miami Museum of Contemporary Art; artist Virginia Overton arrives in the heart of London at White Cube’s Mason’s Yard site.
What is the Virginia Overton art style…
Creating large sculptural installations designed to respond subtly to their environment, Overton is known for her economical use of recycled architectural materials - wood, metal and plexi-glass - typically found in her exhibition space. These weighty construction materials are handled with a remarkably light touch, and her work repeatedly foregrounds notions of equilibrium and gravity.
Overton harnesses, she says, the ‘natural push and pull in materials’. She sculpts by cutting, bending and hammering, embracing the buildup of surface marks as a crucial part of the finished work.
What will we see at White Cube Mason’s Yard, London…
For White Cube, one of the top art galleries in London, Virginia Overton returns to familiar territory by creating a site-specific piece. This will brings together materials sourced in London and the architecture of the gallery to generate unusual acrobatic tensions. Her treatment of the space in this London art show promises to be well worth a visit.
