Now in its ninth year, the annual Insight Astronomy Photographer of the Year contest takes visitors well beyond their usual sphere of vision.

Housed in the spectacular Royal Observatory, Greenwich, the display features winning photographs from 91 countries around the world, whittled down by judges from 3800 spectacular entries by professionals and amateurs.

Highlights from this year's entrants include the Super Moon illuminating the night sky as it sets behind the Marmarole, in the heart of the Italian Dolomites; a panorama of the Northern Lights reflected in the waters in the harbour in Tromso, and a shooting star in Dorset.

With subject categories such as ‘Solar Systems’, ‘Galaxies’, and ‘People and Space’, this year’s competition looks set to feature some of the most awe-inspiring entries yet. Hosted by a building boasting London’s only remaining planetarium, this is one show well worth the journey.

The winner will be announced on 14 September 2017, so watch this space.
