With all the rhetoric and Big Ideas surrounding the general election, Culture Whisper wanted to collect some of the little things that spark emotions about Britain.

In anticipation of May 7, we asked our favourite figures in the arts to tell us what makes Britain feel like home.

Journalist and writer Simon Garfield:

"the coastline: I love that feeling of being in England but looking out and seeing the rest of the world. We are an island and water is so connected to our history."

Simon Garfield is a journalist and Somerset Maugham Prize-winning author whose best-selling books include On The Map, Just My Type and To The Letter.
