With all the rhetoric and Big Ideas surrounding the general election, Culture Whisper wanted to collect some of the little things that spark emotions about Britain.

In anticipation of May 7, we asked our favourite figures in the arts to tell us what makes Britain feel like home.

Journalist and broadcaster Matthew Parris:

"Blackbirds singing in the dead of night. Ornithologists inform me that these birds may also be heard in other countries but I overlook the claim. Open your bedroom window in the small hours and you will know that they are singing to us British - and for us alone."

Matthew Francis Parris is a British journalist, broadcaster and former politician. He writes a weekly political column for The Times.
