5 gorgeous activities for families in London in July

We've rounded up this month's best family activities: July 2016 brings you urban beaches for days in the sun and new films for children to enjoy if it rains

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Holland Park Opera
Beach East at the Park, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park

The biggest (and the best?) urban beach in the UK opens this July offering sandcastle building, sunbathing and spectacular views over the 2012 Olympic Park – not to mention Carsten Höller's exciting slide. We can't wait to play in the sand.

BFG: a new disney film

Directed by Steven Spielberg, this is Roald Dahl's beloved children's story of ten-year-old Sophie, a young girl living in an orphanage run by the cantankerous and abusive Mrs. Clonkers until she's stollen by the Big Friendly Giant and rushed off to a terrifying and exciting new world.

Beatrix Potter exhibition: V&A

The V&A already has a permanent Beatrix Potter collection – and why wouldn't they? She's the beloved British author and illustrator who penned literary classics, most famously The Tale of Peter Rabbit. To mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Potter (1866-1945), a brand new exhibition comes to one of Potter's favourite museums to explore the role of London in the author's life and work.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Opera Holland Park

One of the most hotly anticipated kids events in London: Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Will Todd is returning to Yucca Lawn in Opera Holland Park 2016 after its huge success there last year. It's one of our favourite cultural activities to do with kids this summer and a beautiful introduction to opera.

Finding Dory, Pixar

The sequel to beloved children's film Finding Nemo arrives in the UK this summer following warm reviews in the wake of the US release. This time, it's impaired short-term memory sufferer Dory who leads our heroes on an adventure through the deep blue sea in search of her family. This is the biggest film of the summer for families (and grownups) and an absolutely must-see.
