Jermyn Street Theatre: Letter to Larry
Stunning talent and heart-stopping beauty made Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier the golden couple of their generation. But beneath the romance, Leigh’s fragile mental health and volatile mood swings led to an explosive ending. This is brought to life in this stunning one-woman show, by Donald Macdonald, with Susie Lindeman as Leigh, in a short three week run at the intimate Jermyn Street Theatre.
Letter to Larry play - London
In 1960 Olivier wrote a heartfelt letter asking his wife for a divorce. Leigh’s response was a sensation. Inspired by the actual words of the exchange, Macdonald’s play Letter for Larry vivifies this tumultuous romance, revealing the volatility and fragility that ravaged the iconic actress. Through the recreation of Leigh’s struggle we can glimpse the passion of Scarlett O’Hara and the determination of Cleopatra, while the intimate insight into her marriage reveals secrets and surprises. Having already toured Paris and Los Angeles to celebrate the centenary of Leigh’s birth in 2013, the show received superlative reviews.
