Sweeney Todd, Shaftesbury Avenue

The smash hit immersive Tooting Arts Club Sweeney Todd musical transfers to the West End in a purpose-built pie shop.

Sweeney Todd, Shaftesbury Avenue
Sweeney Todd in a pie shop – this is immersive theatre at its meatiest and we're really rather pleased that Tooting Arts Club's production is getting a second lease of life as the first pop-up musical to hit Shaftesbury Avenue. The show's run in Tooting last year met rave reviews and this recipe for success will stay the same: the original cast and creative team have reunited and relocated.

Whilst the show's West End home may not be a genuine purveyor of pastry - Harrington's Pie and Mash shop in Tooting is undergoing refurbishment, The new 39-45 Shaftesbury Avenue venue had a former life as club and cocktail bar Avalon. Having closed its doors, the venue is being converted into a near perfect replica of the 106 year old Harrington's Pie and Mash Shop, Sweeney Todd's former home and London's oldest functioning pie shop. Whether 39-45 Shaftesbury Avenue follows in the footsteps of its neighbours (it is situated next to The Queen's Theatre which is currently showing Les Miserables) and becomes a full time performance venue following this production remains to be seen. But perhaps the most exciting element of the show is the immersive eating experience: audience members can feast on meat pie and liquor at the candlelit tables from which they watch the action.

Stephen Sondheim
's score to Sweeney Todd is astonishing and atmospheric in any setting (Michael Ball and Imelda Staunton brought the true grit of Victorian London to the Adelphi in 2012), but we can't wait to see the demon barber of Fleet Street on Shaftesbury Avenue.
