Half a Sixpence, Noël Coward Theatre

An exciting addition to London theatre: Julian Fellowes revamps Half a Sixpence

With a creative team including Downton Abbey pioneer Julian Fellowes and Cameron Mackintosh, the producer of hits such as Mary Poppins, Cats and Oliver!, this all-new version of Half a Sixpence has all the ingredients for success.

Based on H.G. Wells's novel Kipps: The Story of a Simple Soul, the musical hasn't graced the West End since its debut in 1963. This new adaptation comes fresh from superlative reviews at Chichester Festival Theatre, following a path forged by award-winning transfers Gypsy and Guys and Dolls. The full Chichester cast of Half a Sixpence – which includes the outstanding Charlie Stemp as Arthur Kipps – will transfer to the West End.

The feel-good plot tells the story of orphan Kipps, who is thrown into an identity crisis by the appearance of an unexpected inheritance and is forced to choose between Ann, his childhood sweetheart, and Helen, his new-found social equal. Questions surrounding class, wealth and romance are combined with humour, flashy dance sequences and the kind of impressive set design we've come to expect from a Cameron Mackintosh production. With seven new songs put together by songwriting powerhouse team George Stiles and Anthony Drewe, expect catchy show tunes.

Half a Sixpence broke box office records at Chichester, so we recommend booking fast for this London run.
