As part of a Karen Blixen season, The Print Room theatre will stage a new version of the writer's much-loved tale, Babette's Feast.
The 1958 short story, which was adapted into an Oscar and BAFTA award winning film in 1987, is the strange, moving narrative of one sublime meal.
Two pious sisters live a simple life in rural Norway. When Babette Hersant, a refugee from Paris, arrives they offer her a position as housekeeper. Then, one day Babette wins 10,000 francs. In an act of self-sacfrifice, she uses her winnings to source and create an extraordinary supper for the whole community. The exotic, sumptuous and plentiful feast unites the villagers, rekindles dormant emotions and demonstrates the generosity of art.
