Antoinette Nwandu mashes up Waiting for Godot, the Exodus and real-life stories in a new play about two young black men

Due to ongoing concerns over Covid-19, performances of Pass Over at the Kiln Theatre have been cancelled between 16-21 March

Paapa Essiedu and Gershwyn Eustace Jr play Moses and Kitch, two young black men who are trying to find their place in the world. Creating a contemporary Exodus story within the framework of Beckett's Waiting for Godot, Antoinette Nwandu's new play is a fearless and politically charged examination of race, justice and selfhood.

Pass Over follows two men navigating a world caught between the legacy of slavery and a new wave of violence. Each day they wake with hope for the future and grand plans to escape and pass over to a promised land. But then a white stranger comes and the allegorical drama becomes increasingly absurdist and dark.

Drawing on the Black Lives Matter movement, the play is built from real-life stories of racially aggravated violence in contemporary American. It transfers to Kilburn's Kiln Theatre after sparking controversy when it opened in America. Critics enthused about a 'blazingly theatrical play' and 'a powerfully imaginative drama that will shake up audiences, instantly tagging the playwright as a significant new voice'.
