Set to the beautiful backdrop of candlelight and special live music in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, this series of Winter’s Tales is an original and thoughtful performance idea.
There will be a number of readings over the Christmas period by renowned actors and actresses such as Penelope Wilton OBE. Extracts will be read from the classic short stories of Anton Chekhov, Katherine Mansfield, D. H Lawrence, James Joyce, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Daphne du Maurier, with more titles and performers to be announced.
Wilton will read The Lady with the Little Dog and some of Chekhov’s other short stories, but the range of authors and genres over the fortnight is wide . From Daphne du Maurier’s novellete, The Birds, which inspired the Hitchcock thriller of the same name, to the sensitive melancholy of Katherine Mansfield’s genius in The Garden Party, there is something to suit every modernist. Lighter relief is to be found in Fitzgerald’s whirlwind tales of the 1920s' glamorous, debauched parties. However, Fitzgerald’s writing is tinged with bitter hangovers of regret and disdain that are as haunting as Gabriel’s struggle with mortality in The Dead by James Joyce.
This intimate setting will make for some emotive evenings over the Winter's Tales run, amalgamating classic literature with the best of British dramatic talent.
