Freud is known worldwide as the great neurologist and founding father of psychoanalysis, and yet to most, his affinity to Bloomsbury is far less familiar. On 8 November at the Freud Museum London, John Forrester will present a fascinating talk on Sigmund Freud in relation to the Bloomsbury group. Freud became associated with the Bloomsbury set during the 1910s and 20s, when key members of the influential intellectual group turned to psychoanalysis. Before long, the Hogarth Press founded by Leonard and Virginia Woolf became the official publishers of psychoanalytic literature.

John Forrester is a Professor of History and Philosophy of the Sciences at the University of Cambridge, specialising in human sciences and the history and philosophy of psychoanalysis. He has written a number of books on Freud and his work, including The Seductions of Psychoanalysis (1990), Freud's Women (1992, with Lisa Appignanesi), and Dispatches from the Freud Wars (1997). At the moment he is completing his latest book (with Laura Cameron), a study of the reception of psychoanalysis in the 1920s titled Freud in Cambridge.

Freud in Bloomsbury is part of a series of talks and events accompanying the exhibition Mad, Bad and Sad: Women and the Mind Doctors, which will run at the Freud Museum from 10 October 2013 – 2 February 2014. The lecture will not only discuss the reasons for the connection between Freud and the Bloomsbury group, it will explore whether the history of psychoanalysis in Britain differs radically from other countries due to an early affiliation with a bohemian, anti-establishment elite from the English middle class. This promises to be a most enlightening talk that will illuminate the significance of Freud's time in London.
