‘The measure of a man is what he does with power.’ So runs Plato’s famous formulation. But how does humankind measure up in the early 21st century? Well, if you’re looking for the answer, Southbank Centre’s Power of Power festival is a good place to start.

The premise is an ambitious one. Spread across four weekends, the programme is loosely structured around Wagner’s opera cycle The Ring, asking how its themes – wealth, desire, dynasty – manifest themselves in today's world. The list of speakers is extensive, so we’ve picked out a few essentials.
