Opera Holland Park 2022
An opera inspired by a classic novel joins the repertoire at London's own country house opera

Tchaikovsky, Bizet, Delius, Puccini.... the composers of Opera Holland Park's 2022 productions span the centuries and the emotions. And a late 20th-century work joins their ranks too.
Little Women, Louisa May Alcott's classic American novel about sisters entering adulthood is the inspiration for Mark Adamo's 1998 opera. Its UK premiere will call on Opera Holland Park's rich roster of women artists, and Little Women sure to be a highlight of a promising season.
Tchaikovsky's heartbreaking Eugene Onegin – also about the transition from girlhood to womanhood – opens the new season on 31 May. It is followed by Bizet's hot-blooded Carmen, in which a femme fatale is brought down by love.
A little later comes the double bill of Delius's Margot La Rouge and Puccini's Le Villi. Margot La Rouge is the brief, colourful story of a prostitute, which has been compared to Mascagni's passionate Cavelleria Rusticana. In Le Villi, spirits conspire to avenge the death of a neglected young woman, forcing her feckless lover to dance to his death.
The highly successful collaboration between OHP and the witty and resourceful Charles Court Opera continues in 2022 with the timeless comic operetta HMS Pinafore, with its pompous and unqualified Ruler of the Queen's Navy, Sir Joseph Porter. Librettist and composer WS Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan were masters at spotting frauds in high places.
