The British Museum
No plans for half term February 2016? In London? Then we have the perfect solution. The British Museum, one of our favourite museums for children, is hosting a free, drop-in artistic workshops throughout half term inspired by the 2010 exhibition, Scanning Sobek: mummy of the crocodile god, so you don't have to be organised to get the most of London this half term.
In the Ashai Shimbun display, families come face-to-face with an enormous mummified crocodile, wancient Egyptians believed was an incarnation of the crocodile god Sobek.
At nearly 4 metres long, this unusual mummy has over 25 baby crocodile hatchlings on its back, which can be clearly seen using the help of state-of-the-art CT scans. Families revel in the weird and wonderful mythology of Sobek and discover how ancient Egyptians worshiped him as both a crocodile and a man.
Families this half term discover the history of this extraordinary crocodile mummy, and the stories linking it to the other animal deities from around the world -- before getting creative!
Make your own animal gods to take home and listen to the tales of ancient peoples as told by the British Museum's storytellers.
Suitable for ages 5-8
