Families celebrate Chinese New Year this February with creative workshops and storytelling afternoons in the National Maritime Museum and Cutty Sark

James Robson performance
Explore the Traders gallery in the company of James Robson, a Chinese lascar (sailor) who served on the fastest and greatest of the tea clippers, Cutty Sark. Find out about the struggles of the tea trade between Britain and China on your journey, and the impact of the 19th-century Opium Wars on both countries.

Guangzhou Art Troupe performance
Catch the Guangzhou Art Troupe on the first day of their UK tour. The troupe will be coming all the way from China to share a traditional musical puppetry performance. There will be a chance after the performance to see close up the puppets and costumes used.

Take part in a traditional Chinese ribbon dance in this workshop for children of all ages and their adults in the Great Map room. Tickets available on a first come first-served basis

Chinese New Year on board the Cutty Sark
Fold, draw and cut out amazing shapes representing the Chinese zodiac in our drop-in paper-cutting workshop in celebration of Chinese New Year. You’ll learn lots of new paper cutting techniques from our artist-facilitator, and will be able to take your design home to decorate your room.
