A Christmas Star Review: Culture Whisper says ★★★★★
It's not altogether easy to write a review of A Christmas Star when the plot, even by the end of the film, remains something of a mystery.
It generally follows the story of a little Irish girl (Erin Galway-Kendrick) who was born in a stable and grows up to discover she can perform miracles. When a conniving developer McKerrod (he's the baddy, can you tell?) played by Rob James-Collier (better known the equally evil Tom Barrow in Downton Abbey), turns up to buy her father's snow globe factory, the girl and her friends work their magic to bring him down. In the end, it's the power of friendship rather than the magic of... (Jesus?)... that wins the day.
Little eyes easily enchanted by a bit of magic and a happy ending may get something from it. But for parents, a nonsensical plot and hammy acting are baffling and painful in equal measure.
Even a starry cast featuring Liam Neeson, Pierce Brosnan and guest appearance from Kylie Minogue, and a refreshing strong female protagonist, were unable to save this film.
We recommend going to see some of the wonderful kids shows on in London this winter instead.
