V&A Museum of Childhood: days out for kids in London
A Family Friendly London Museum
As the name suggests, the V&A Museum of Childhood is all about families. As well as a rolling series of exhibitions that explore the life of children from around the world and the past, it hosts regular activities and storytelling for families, an impressive permanent collection of toys and games from the past and tactile exhibits to help engage young minds.
Highlights of the V&A Museum of Childhood
The Museum houses Britain’s biggest collection of dolls’ houses, including the 1673 Nuremberg Dolls’ House, one of its most valuable exhibits. There is a gallery of Childcare, examining attitudes and methods of childrearing throughout time and a Good Times area, an interactive zone, featuring a sandpit, which explores how children spend their free time. Technologically minded kids will love the Optical Toys zone, which studies the moving image and early children’s’ entertainment. And for London's tiny tots there's a brightly lit, tactile Sensory Pad to stimulate the senses as well as a quiet room.
Kids Activities
The V&A Museum of Childhood offers Montessori Activity packs for children of five and under to take with them around the collection. Featuring maps, activities, toys to touch and play with, and storytelling ideas, even the most restless toddlers will delight in taking charge of their museum experience.
In order to make the museum more accessible for families with additional needs, a Making SENSe family backpack is also on offer for navigating both the Moving Toys and the Childhood galleries.
