Henry the Fifth, Unicorn Theatre

Not sure what to see this bank holiday Monday? This Henry the Fifth adaptation especially for children and families by dutch writer Ignance Cornelissen, premiered to four star reviews in 2013. It's back again under the stewardship of director Ellen McDougall, who is also working on the very adult plays Anna Karenina and Rolling Stone and at the Royal Exchange theatre in Manchester.
Shakespeare’s Hundred Years War history play is transformed into a schoolboy fight between King Henry and the French Dauphin - here called Nigel.
In a set designed by James Button, a fashion veteran who spent several years working with Vivienne Westwood, France is turned into a vast sandpit. The conflict of Shakespeare's is conveyed thorugh balloon armies that knock down the very sandcastles they’re fighting over. 
Cornelissen’s Henry the Fifth is a morality tale about the futility of war, with an empowered French queen Katherine and enough sword fighting to get every tiny child’s heart racing.
