Ahoy Mateys! Cutty Sark at half-term

Ahoy there mateys! There’s plenty of maritime fun afoot at the Royal Museums Greenwich this half term whether you’re looking to plunge into a whole day out or just have a free afternoon on your hands.

We love the Turner at Sea at the National Maritime Museum, which hosts free weekend workshops for children about how the sea shaped Britain’s past. Workshops are 2 hours long and run and start at 11:30 and 14:00 on Sunday 19 and Sunday 26 January. 

Combine a trip to see Turner with a visit to the Cutty Sark – everyone’s favourite tea clipper. Trips here never fails to delight boys, girls and grown-ups alike, and on 16 February kids have a chance to meet Captain Woodget – the longest serving master aboard the clipper – to learn what life was like on board. Performances are throughout the day on the Cutty Sark Main Deck, and are free with entry to the Sark. 

Does all that puts you in mind of tea? There’s more: on February 18 and 20 the Chinese theatre company Yellow Earth will be delighting under-10s with free interactive storytelling performances about how the cup of tea came to arrive in Britain. Performances are at 11:30, 13:30 and 15:30 on both days, and take place on Floor One of the National Maritime Museum. 

But be warned – half-term queues at the Cutty Sark can be hideous, so remember to book in advance.
