Hannah at The Unicorn Theatre
The famous legend of the doctor who sells his soul to the devil in exchange for knowledge and power, immortalised by Christopher Marlowe, doesn't sound like obvious material for children. London's leading children's theatre, The Unicorn, is undaunted, however, in its re-imagining of Doctor Faustus  as a modern myth for anyone 11 years and upwards.
In award-winning Edinburgh Fringe favourite Chris Thorpe’s new version, Marlowe’s eponymous doctor becomes Hannah, a young girl who gets frustrated with the world while her mum works hard to put things right. But when she suddenly finds herself wielding unexpected power, Hannah is forced to ask big questions about right and wrong and appearance versus reality.
This production follows a busy few months for Thorpe, whose thorny new play There Has Possibly Been an Incident recently premiered at Edinburgh ahead of runs in Manchester and London. Edinburgh also saw the first glimpse of I Wish I Was Lonely , a new poetry and performance project with his long-term collaborator, the poet Hannah Jane Walker, which playfully investigates our relationship with the mobile phones we constantly carry around like extra limbs. Based on the strength of these two fascinating pieces, we have high hopes for Hannah and we can’t wait to see how Thorpe adapts his distinctive writing style for younger audiences.
The Unicorn has a strong track record with work that is as entertaining and thought-provoking for adults as it is for children, so this latest production is likely to offer something for big kids as well as for small ones.
