The Fourth Wise Man, Unicorn Theatre
The secret story of Artaban, the forgotten Wise Man. This is a unique and funny show for the family this Christmas season.
The Story...
Though the three wise men were very wise indeed, Artaban was even wiser. It's King Artaban who first spots the new star shining over Bethlehem. But his is a stranger and far longer journey to the manger that holds the baby Jesus.
Inspired by the 1895 children's novel The Other Wise Man, by Henry Van Dyke, the Unicorn have already been workshopping this show with familiar faces such as Ritu Arya (who starred in both the acclaimed 1001 Nights and Liar Liar for the Unicorn.) King Artaban is a force for good, helping those in need along his journey even if it means delaying his arrival. He defends the mothers and their children sentenced to death by Herod, and travels across the world even to the Sphinxes of Egypt. It's an enchanting take on the Nativity. Not least thanks to a loyal camel companion.
Van Dyke described the story as one he never felt ownership of but like a gift he had been given. "I do not know where this little story came from— out of the air, perhaps." Part parable , part adventure story , the tale has been given new life by the ever-inventive Unicorn, who excel at inventive and slightly offbeat Christmas productions.
This show is recommended for children age four and up.
