I Believe in Unicorns, Southbank Centre
Michael Morpurgo, award-winning author of children's books War Horse and Private Peaceful is one of Britain's best loved children's writers. His moving, albeit lesser known novel, I Believe in Unicorns arrived on the West End stage last year on a wave of praise. And for February half term, this one-woman show comes to London's fabulous Southbank Centre as part of Imagine Children's Festival - starring Michael Morpurgo himself, who will be joining the cast onstage for a post-show discussion.
I Believe in Unicorns: story on stage
Tomas hates school. So when his mother drags him to the library one day he is in no mood for magic. But then he meets the Unicorn Lady, who is surrounded by books and bursting with stories. She tells Tomas why unicorns really do exist and captivates him with her storytelling, revealing the power of imagination. But war casts its long shadow even over Tomas’ tiny village and the library is burning...
The Production...

This one woman show by actress Danyah Miller comes to life on a set filled with quivering book towers designed by Kate Bunce, whose work is described as "more of a circus than a library". Under the direction of Dani Parr, Associate Director at Royal & Derngate in Northampton, the production invites children to have their own ideas, in a world of puppets and pop-outs and dramatic sound and light effects.
