Ask anyone with children: shows designed especially for the entertainment of little minds are often dull, humdrum and diabolically lazy.
Along comes Baddies: The Musical at the Unicorn Theatre, here to prove that just because children's theatre is for young ones, it can still be first class.
A sharp plot, well-drawn characters and the funniest script our reviewers have seen in a long time. Last year, Culture Whisper gave the musical four stars.
This is the story of the Big Bad Wolf: a gentle giant wolf in a biker jacket who sings with 'Little Red Riding Hood' before preparing to rip her limb from limb.
To everyone's surprise, the police turn up mid-song, arresting Wolfie and imprison him with other fairytale baddies: the Ugly Sisters, Rumpelstiltskin (whose credentials as a 'baddy' are widely disputed) and, of course, Captain Hook.
Wolfie's girlfriend, Cinderella, turns up with a slick and well-oiled Peter Pan who is 'the best at everything' to rescue them – but something weird is afoot. Poor Wolfie suffers an existential crisis, questioning whether it's possible to be a good person whilst also being a baddy who eats grandmothers.
An unmissable family friendly pantomime we recommend for all.
