It’s perhaps not every young musicians dream to be endorsed by Madonna. But when the queen of pop cites you as an inspiration, it’s likely that you’re doing something right. And, as it turns out, Héloïse Letissier is doing plenty right. Recording under the name Christine & The Queens, the twenty eight year old from Nantes is making some of the most infectious, intelligent synth pop going.

As a persona, Christine and the Queens has its origins in Soho’s drag scene, a genesis which is reflected not only in the lyricism, but also in the singer’s own binary-refuting, be-suited aesthetic. The music rejects other polarities too; Letissier sings in both French and English, and somehow manages to marry high-end production and DIY intimacy. And it’s amazing just how much density she can coax from such minimal arrangements.

Highly choreographed and energetic, the show is not to be missed. Catch Christine and the Queens will play at London's Brixton Academy in the first show of her UK tour, before playing in Manchester and Glasgow.
