On 2015’s Primrose Green, Ryley Walker revealed himself as one of folk music’s most exciting young talents. Of course, his songwriting owes a large debt to earlier greats; Nick Drake and John Martyn are just two of a long list of possible reference points. But it’s worth remembering that folk, perhaps above all genres, relies heavily on an idea of shared and continued tradition. More importantly, Ryley plays with conviction; if he hews close to his influences, he does so in genuine appreciation of what has come before.

On February 29, he is joined by Danny Thompson, a founding member of folk favourites Pentangle, at London’s Bush Hall. An accomplished multi-instrumentalist, Thompson is best known as a double bassist, and has worked with the likes of Kate Bush, Roy Orbison and Ronnie Scott. This meeting of two generations is sure to delight: expect lilting balladry and psych-inflected epics. The duo have already sold out an earlier date so make sure to get tickets while you still can.
