Jackals, lighthouses, coastlines: Villagers’ lyrical reference points, as their instrumentation, bring to mind remote, rugged environments.

It was in just such a locale that Darling Arithmetic, the band’s most recent album, was written, recorded and produced. Taking up residence in a converted farmhouse in the small Irish town of Malahide, singer and multi-instrumentalist Connor O’ Brien took creative control of the process. He crafted a remarkably intimate record, playing every instrument himself, among them melletron, brushes, and piano. It is a poetic tour of a human heart that traverses, among so much else, the exhilaration of a fledgling relationship, the brutishness of prejudice, and the naivety of youth.

Twice nominated for the Mercury Prize, Villagers are at the forefront of popular folk music, a perfect channel for their introspective lyricism. January 2016 saw the band release their fourth album to date: Where Have You Been All My Life? Recorded in just a day, it finds the band reworking earlier tracks.

Villagers' scheduled performance at Shepherd's Bush Empire has been moved to St John at Hackney. The date remains the same, and tickets remain valid.
