In what has to be a contender for the most intriguing gig taking place in London this year, Norwegian trumpeter Nils Petter Molvaer teams up with renowned Jamaican rhythm section and reggae production team bassist Robbie Shakespeare and drummer Sly Dunbar for a set at the Barbican.
An ECM recording artist, Molvaer is a leading exponent of experimental ‘future jazz’, a fusion of jazz and electronica, while Sly and Robbie have legendary status in the music industry having appeared on over 200,000 tracks, working with everyone from Herbie Hancock to Joan Armatrading, Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones.
Joining them on stage is guitarist Eivind Aarset – a frequent Molvaer collaborator – and Finnish electronics maestro Vladislav Delay. Expect visceral grooves that draw from reggae and dub combined with icy electronic washes and contemporary jazz minimalism.
Unusual? Yes, but with musicians of this calibre on the bill this has the potential to be revelatory too.
