Julian Siegel Quartet, Vortex Jazz Club

Leading British saxophonist/clarinettist Julian Siegel and his quartet come to the Vortex in June.

Julian Siegel Quartet, Vortex Jazz Club
Leading British saxophonist/clarinettist Julian Siegel is back at the Vortex with his top flight quartet, featuring inventive pianist Liam Noble, bassist Oli Hayhurst and drummer Gene Calderazzo.
A former winner of Best Instrumentalist at the BBC Jazz Awards, Siegel has been an influential figure on the British jazz scene since the early 90s, both as a member of electro outfit Partisans; standout big bands led by the likes of Andrew Hill, Kenny Wheeler, Hermeto Pascoal and Django Bates; and as the leader of acoustic projects like this one, his flagship ensemble.
The group have kept a low profile in recent years and this return is a welcome one. Expect new compositions and tracks from their acclaimed 2011 release, Urban Theme Park, a thought-provoking mash up of twisting post-bop melody lines, rhythmically complex piano grooves, abrupt time changes and the occasional hint at fusion vibes, courtesy of Noble’s electric piano work.
