Jack Garratt, Village Underground

A rising star plays a London gig: Jack Garratt takes to Village Underground this May.

Jack Garratt, Village Underground
Jack Garratt's star has been slowly rising since last year, when he racked up 100,000 listens on Soundcloud within just two months. Support shows with Ben Howard  have followed, and while plenty of reviewers already have remarked on his Shoreditch-ready look – all coiffed beard, 5-panel cap and button-down collar – this is to overlook a genuinely exciting talent and a producer in the lineage of some of the best the UK has turned out in recent years.
Over a collection of bass wobbles straight out of The xx's copybook, Jack's vocal hooks don't come off sounding quite so achingly, untouchably hip, with influences from the Sam Smith/Disclosure school of modern R&B and a flickering, hovering vocal quality.
For a man who released his debut EP at the back end of 2014, his production is assured and on-trend, and the choppy, growling guitar that splashes across Worry and others is testament to his willingness to venture away from the well-worn groove of post-James Blake electronica.
New release The Love You're Given might be his most impressive so far, with Garratt in confident enough mood to take fully two minutes stitching together the opening hook, which blossoms into a warm, polished groove. Although it's still early days to talk about a full LP, and while this will be the first time he has headlined at a place the size of the VU, it looks pretty sure that Jack Garratt is a man on the up, with enough talent to last amongst a crowded field of snappily-dressed young producers.
